Quick Questions with Jaena
What's something you're reading or watching right now? Tell us about it.
I recently finished reading "America is Not the Heart" by Elaine Castillo. It follows three generations of women in one family and their struggles with the American Dream and family history. I've been on a Filipino American literature kick lately. Next, I'll read a few graphic novels by Filipino American illustrators and writers.
How are you staying grounded during this time?
I volunteered as a Disaster Service Worker for San Francisco, helping with the city's COVID-19 response. It gives me a regular routine and helps me save a little money on grocery shopping. It also harkens back to my background as a journalist, because I work on the content team that disseminates information about the pandemic.
What is something you want to learn more about?
I'm really trying to learn more about my cultural background. I didn't grow up learning Tagalog, or learning Philippine myths, or eating much Filipino food. I'm trying to learn Tagalog now with Rosetta Stone through my library's e-resources, and every weekend during this shelter-in-place I've been cooking a new Filipino recipe.
Who do you want to be in 5 years?
I want to be in charge of my own branch, and giving back to any BIPOCs seeking to enter the profession.
Tell us about your first library job? How did it shape your career choice today?
My first librarian job was as a sort of floater for my library system. I would pick up shifts at different branches around San Francisco. This gave me a great sense of what kind of librarian I wanted to be, and what kind of communities I wanted to serve.
What legacy do you wish to leave as a Kick Ass Librarian in the field?
If I were to leave a legacy, I'd want it to be about giving back. To the community, to my colleagues, to anyone new in the profession. I believe in lifting each other up.
What legacy do you wish to leave as a Informational Professional in the field?
As an Information Professional, I'd want to be known for uplifting Filipino literature and making it more mainstream and accessible.
